Imagine two roads of equal length. One has two lanes; the other has ten. The wider road can carry more cars together. It does not, by itself, make the journey shorter.

The same distinction helps explain bandwidth and latency. Bandwidth describes capacity for data transfer. Latency describes delay. Actual throughput is the data rate achieved in practice. Why a video download and a conversation feel different

When you download a large file, sustained transfer rate strongly affects how soon it finishes. A live conversation also depends on how promptly each small piece of speech reaches the other person. Distance, processing and queues all contribute to that wait. Extra bandwidth can help if congestion is the problem, but it does not erase the time a signal spends travelling.

An idealised journey

For the small experiment below, assume an optical propagation speed of 200,000 kilometres per second and a specified one-way cable length. These are illustrative inputs, not measurements of a Delhi–London connection. Dividing distance by speed gives one-way propagation time. Doubling it gives a minimum propagation-only round trip.

Try the arithmetic
For a 10,000 km one-way fibre path: 10,000 / 200,000 = 0.05 seconds, or 50 milliseconds one way. The propagation-only round trip is 100 milliseconds. Equipment, access links, queuing and server processing add further delay. The return path may also differ in a real network.

Increasing link capacity does not change that assumed propagation speed. Moving the server nearer reduces the distance. This is one reason services place suitable content closer to readers through CDNs. Content delivery networks — Cloudflare.
